Idea of a Christian Political Prince represented in a hundred companies was the most famous work of Diego de Saavedra compared as an opposite to Machiavelli's "The Prince". It is a work of remarkable erudition that adopts the emblematic genre, popularized by Andrea Alciato through his Emblemata, translated in 1549. The author's central objective is to offer guidance for the proper political education of a Christian sovereign.
It was first published in Munich by Nicolao Enrico in 1640, and two years later in Milan. Since its appearance, the text reached a wide diffusion in Europe, being the object of numerous editions and translations throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
In the Spanish-speaking world, the work has been the subject of multiple critical editions. Among the most outstanding is the one published by Vicente García de Diego in Madrid (La Lectura, 1927-1930), structured in four volumes within the Clásicos Castellanos collection. This same edition was revised and reprinted by Espasa-Calpe between 1942 and 1946, and later a third printing was made by the same publisher.
