Fray Joseph Ortiz y Sanz (1739-1822), a native of Valencia with liberal inclinations, was the most productive researcher of Classical Antiquity among the intellectuals who succeeded the generation of the Marquis of Valdeflores. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he managed to see most of his works published. However, his ambitious project entitled Viaje arqueológico de España, despite the sustained support of Charles III and Charles IV, was never completed, as was the similar attempt undertaken by his illustrious predecessor.
