Emile, or Of Education (Émile, ou De l'éducation) is a treatise on education and human nature, written by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who considered it the most important and significant of his works. The inclusion of the passage entitled Profession of Faith of the Savoyard vicar led to the book being banned in Paris and Geneva, where it was publicly burned in 1762, the year of its publication. The work was also censored by the Church, which included it in the Index of banned books.
During the French Revolution, Emilio inspired the creation of a new national education system. Later, after the independence of the United States, Noah Webster drew on its contents for the development of widely distributed school textbooks, and used its arguments to defend the civic need for universal female education.
