Louis de Bignon (1771-1841) was a French diplomat and historian, noted for his participation in Napoleonic foreign policy and for his historiographical production. Of humble origin, he rose quickly thanks to his talent, occupying key diplomatic posts in Europe. He was a signatory of the surrender of Paris in 1815 and a constant opponent of absolutism in the Restoration.
During the reign of Louis Philippe he briefly held two ministries, but his earlier criticism of the European powers limited his influence. He retired to write History of France under Napoleon, an extensive work that remains an important source for understanding that period.
