Jean-François Regnard was an outstanding French playwright of the 17th century, considered the most important in comedy after Molière. Heir to a fortune and trained in the classics, he led a life marked by travel, including an experience of captivity in North Africa. His Voyage de Laponie, based on his tour of Northern Europe, offers an early, if stereotyped, look at the Sami people.
After settling in Paris, he combined court life with playwriting. He composed twenty-three comedies in verse for the Comédie-Française, including Le Joueur and Le Légataire universel, plays that consolidated his reputation in the Molieresque tradition. He died at his château de Grillon in 1709.
