Scarron was an extremely prolific author. The most famous work in his time was Virgile travesti (1648-1653), a parody of the Aeneid, although over time the reputation of this piece diminished. Today, Virgile travesti is considered to represent a somewhat unfortunate use of a singular talent devoted to the burlesque genre. Le Roman comique (1651-1657), on the other hand, is recognized as his most accomplished work. This narrative, centered on a troupe of itinerant comedians, can be considered one of the first French novels to reveal a genuine ability to portray customs and characters with remarkable vividness. It is in the style of the Spanish picaresque novel and inspired Théophile Gautier for his Capitaine Fracasse, both in its conception and in some of its narrative elements.
