BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Homilies and Carthusian Sermons. Volume I. Lyon, 1585.
Language: Latin
Binding: Original period binding, leather over boards with metal fittings.
Volume I of the series.
Measurements: 40 x 30 x 5 cm.

Exceptional copy of the first volume of a rare compilation of Carthusian homilies and sermons, printed in Lyon in 1585, in Latin, intended for monastic reading and preaching within the Carthusian Order. It is a work of great spiritual and bibliographical value, representative of the exegetical and pastoral tradition of the Carthusian contemplative life in the middle of the post-Tridentine period.

The volume has an original period binding, in leather over boards, preserving intact the metal fittings (corners and clasps), which testify both its monastic use and its value as a devotional object. The spine, also in leather, shows visible traces of handwritten or engraved titles. Interior in good condition, with minimal moisture marks, some ornate capitals and crisp movable type. Text in double columns.

Works such as this were used by the Carthusians for both liturgy and spiritual formation in the cloister. Despite its formal austerity, its content is of great theological and rhetorical richness, gathering sermons centered on the Gospels, liturgical feasts and Christian morals according to the spirit of Saint Bruno.

A very rare copy, especially for preserving the original binding with hardware, a rare aspect in works of daily monastic use that have survived the passage of time in such good condition. Ideal for libraries specializing in religious heritage, book history, and collectors of antique printed works.
