Collection of three books on Japanese export porcelain and ceramics, a genre produced in Japan for the international market, especially for Europe and North America. These were pieces created in Japan to satisfy Western tastes, often blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with motifs and forms that resonated abroad. Production for Western export falls into two main periods: from 1650 to 1740, and from 1850 onward. One of the books, written by Nancy Schiffer, focuses on ceramics of the Meiji period (1868-1912), an era of modernization and growth of international trade in Japan. These studies cover various types of Japanese export ceramics, such as Imari porcelain, Kutani, and Satsuma pottery.
