Sevillian school, circle of JUAN DE VALDÉS LEAL (Seville, 1622-1690); second half of the seventeenth century.
"Saint Paul".
Oil on canvas. Relined.

Measurements: 40 x 39 cm.
The painting reveals a strong stylistic imprint of Juan de Valdés Leal, particularly in the dramatic use of light, the deep chromatism and the loose brushstroke, characteristic features of his pictorial language. The style responds to the assumptions of the most expressive baroque, in contrast to the idealized serenity of other Sevillian contemporaries such as Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Here an intense naturalism predominates, almost tenebrist, where the figure emerges from a dark background through a focal illumination that emphasizes the psychological features of the saint. The vibrant and sometimes sketchy brushstrokes contribute to a sense of immediacy and drama.
The work depicts St. Paul the Apostle, identified by his traditional attributes: the sword, symbol of his martyrdom, and his appearance as a mature man with a dark beard. The penetrating and slightly elevated gaze suggests a state of inspiration or divine revelation, in keeping with his role as one of the main propagators of Christianity. The reddish robe reinforces his status as a martyr and his dedication to the faith.
Juan de Valdés Leal was one of the most singular figures of the Spanish Baroque, standing out for his vehement style and his inclination towards themes with a strong moral and spiritual charge. In contrast to the sweetness of Murillo, Valdés Leal developed a rougher and more dramatic language, influenced by tenebrist naturalism and the Andalusian pictorial tradition. His production was especially marked by his activity in Hermandad de la Caridad, where he produced some of his most famous works, characterized by their emotional intensity and his reflection on the transience of life. His influence extended to his immediate circle and to numerous Sevillian painters who adopted his expressive vigor and his luminous treatment.
