Georges-Louis Leclerc was one of the great scholars of the Enlightenment: naturalist, mathematician and writer who tried nothing less than to explain the entire natural world. His monumental work, the Histoire naturelle, gathered in dozens of volumes the knowledge of his time about the Earth, animals and the universe, becoming a reference that influenced thinkers such as Denis Diderot, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. An early member of the Academy of Sciences and director of the Jardin du Roi, he transformed this space into an important scientific center. His thinking, innovative for the time, approached the history of the Earth and life with a broad and dynamic vision, laying key foundations for the later development of biology and geology.
