Federico García Lorca cultivated throughout his career a deep fascination for popular theater and traditional forms of representation. Títeres de cachiporra is one of the most singular manifestations of this interest, recovering the tradition of puppet shows and marionettes to transform it through his particular poetic and dramatic sensibility.
The work is part of the most popular and playful side of Lorca's theatrical production. Inspired by the traditional characters of puppet theater, it combines humor, satire, irreverence and elements from popular Spanish folklore. Under the guise of entertainment, the text reveals the author's extraordinary ability to reinterpret traditional stage forms and give them a modern literary dimension, rich in symbolism, musicality and expressive force.
Lorca's fondness for puppet theater was closely linked to his work of cultural and pedagogical renovation. Through these pieces, he sought to bring theater closer to diverse audiences, while at the same time vindicating a stage tradition that he considered fundamental within the Spanish cultural heritage. In this sense, Títeres de cachiporra is a valuable testimony of a lesser-known facet of his production, complementary to his great rural tragedies and his most famous poetic dramas.
From a bibliographical point of view, this first edition from Buenos Aires is of particular interest both for its rarity and its relevance in the publishing history of Lorca's work.
