Poema del cante jondo is one of his first great explorations of the Andalusian universe, in which Lorca turns flamenco singing into literary material of high aesthetic value. Although composed in the 1920s, the book was not published until 1931, when its first edition appeared in charge of the publishing house Ulises Compañía Iberoamericana de Publicaciones, with offices in Madrid and Buenos Aires.
In this work, Lorca delves into the deepest roots of Andalusian musical folklore, especially in the cante jondo, understood not only as an artistic expression, but also as a tragic manifestation of pain, destiny and cultural identity. The poet transforms these elements into a refined poetic language, in which image and rhythm acquire an almost musical dimension.
The book is situated in a key stage of Lorca's evolution, in which the motifs that he would later develop in works such as Romancero gitano are consolidated. The moon, death, grief and the Andalusian landscape appear as fundamental elements of his symbolic universe, treated with an expressive intensity that combines the popular with the cultured.
From the bibliographical point of view, the first edition of 1931 is of notable interest as it is a relatively late publication with respect to the composition of the text and a fundamental title for understanding the poet's aesthetic origins. The intervention of Ulises Compañía Iberoamericana de Publicaciones also reflects the transatlantic character of the dissemination of Lorca's work in the Hispanic sphere.
As a whole, Poema del cante jondo represents a key piece in the construction of Federico García Lorca's poetic universe, as well as a fundamental testimony of his early links with the Andalusian musical tradition and its transformation into universal literary material.
