Federico García Lorca published Mariana Pineda as one of his first great theatrical works, inspired by the historical figure of the liberal heroine from Granada executed in 1831 for her opposition to the absolutism of Ferdinand VII. The play is an exaltation of the ideals of freedom and an early example of Lorca's ability to fuse history, poetry and drama.
The present copy corresponds to number 52 of the first edition published in Madrid by the publishing house La Farsa in 1928, as part of the famous theatrical collection of the same name, which contributed decisively to the diffusion of contemporary Spanish theater. This edition is of special bibliographic interest due to its chronological proximity to the premiere of the play and for being part of one of the first publications aimed at disseminating the text among the general public.
The volume includes illustrations made by García Lorca himself for the decorations of El barbero, providing an added attraction to the copy by showing the plastic facet of the author, less known but closely linked to his creative universe. These drawings reflect Lorca's visual sensitivity and his interest in scenography as a fundamental element of theatrical representation.
Also noteworthy is the presence of the exlibris of the Club Deportivo Italcable of Montevideo, an element of provenance that enriches the particular history of the copy and testifies to the circulation and reception of Spanish literature in the Latin American cultural sphere during the first decades of the 20th century.
