Poet in New York is one of the most representative works of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. It was written between 1929 and 1930 during the author's stay in the United States, although it was never published during his lifetime. The first edition appeared in 1940, four years after his death, thanks to the editorial work of José Bergamín and Editorial Séneca, founded by Spanish exiles in Mexico.
The work reflects the profound impact that his experience in New York City had on Lorca. Through a poetry marked by surrealist images, the author expresses his anguish before a society dominated by capitalism, dehumanization and social inequalities. The book addresses themes such as the loneliness of the individual in the big city, racial injustice, economic exploitation and the loss of human values in an increasingly industrialized world. Thus, Poet in New York is an intense critique of urban modernity and its consequences on the human condition.
To understand the importance of this work, it is necessary to consider the figure of Federico García Lorca, one of the most influential writers of 20th century Spanish literature. A member of the Generation of '27, he stood out not only as a poet, but also as a playwright, musician and visual artist. His creativity transcended various artistic fields, and many of his drawings, signed by himself, are evidence of the importance he gave to his visual production. According to the poet Rafael Alberti, Lorca preserved in his creations a freshness and imagination that evoked memories of his childhood in Granada. However, his trip to New York meant a significant aesthetic transformation, as his work began to incorporate elements of the surrealism that was spreading throughout Europe in those years.
In Poeta en Nueva York, this stylistic change is evident. The language becomes more complex, symbolic and visionary, moving away from the traditional forms that had characterized earlier works such as Romancero gitano. The city is represented as a hostile and alienating space, where human beings lose their identity in the face of the power of money and urban machinery. At the same time, Lorca expresses a deep solidarity with marginalized and oppressed groups, especially with the African-American population, whose situation he observed during his stay in the United States.
The relevance of this work is also related to the tragic fate of its author. Lorca was shot in 1936, shortly after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, becoming one of the most emblematic victims of Franco's repression. His death prevented him from seeing published a work that today is considered one of the summits of contemporary poetry.
