El hombre deshabitado, published in 1931 by the publishing house Plutarco in Madrid, is one of the most significant theatrical works of the first stage of Rafael Alberti, an essential figure of the Generation of 1927. Written at a time of full avant-garde effervescence, the play is part of the poetic and experimental theater of the early twentieth century, where the break with traditional dramatic forms becomes the central axis of creation.
The work poses a symbolic and allegorical reflection on the human condition, articulated through characters and situations that transcend the real to enter a metaphysical and existential plane. In it, Alberti explores themes such as dehumanization, the loss of identity and the spiritual emptiness of the modern individual, constructing a scenic universe of strong poetic and visual charge.
From a stylistic point of view, El hombre deshabitado is characterized by formal freedom, the use of surreal images and an unconventional dramatic structure, in which language acquires a fundamental role as a generator of meaning. This work reflects the influence of the European avant-garde, especially surrealism, and the author's interest in profoundly renewing Spanish theater.
As a whole, this first edition of 1931 represents a key moment in Alberti's evolution towards a writing increasingly committed to artistic experimentation and the exploration of the boundaries between poetry and theater, consolidating his position as one of the most innovative voices of his generation.
