The set of manuscripts consisting of Las verbenas, La navidad del Vizconde and Luz y aire de América constitutes an exceptional testimony of the intimate literary production of Ramón Gómez de la Serna, one of the most original and revolutionary figures of 20th century Spanish literature. An avant-garde writer, creator of the greguerías and author of an oeuvre marked by formal freedom, imagination and humor, Gómez de la Serna developed a deeply personal writing that finds in these handwritten documents one of its most direct and revealing expressions.
Las verbenas, composed of 16 handwritten pages, reflects the author's fascination with the popular environments of Madrid, converted into literary material through his fragmentary, sensorial and poetic gaze. In these texts, the verbena is transformed into a space of aesthetic observation where the everyday acquires a fantastic nuance, in keeping with his characteristic style.
La Navidad del Vizconde, composed of 26 handwritten pages, enters a narrative territory where the festive is mixed with the ironic and the unusual. The title already suggests the interplay between the aristocratic and the absurd, a constant in the work of Gómez de la Serna, who turns apparently conventional situations into scenarios of literary strangeness. This manuscript reveals his ability to reinvent narrative traditions through humor and verbal invention.
Luz y aire de América, with 16 handwritten pages, belongs to his stage linked to his exile in America, where the author continues to develop his creative universe from a perspective marked by geographical and cultural displacement. In these texts one can perceive an open, expansive and contemplative look at the American continent, interpreted through his aesthetic sensibility and his particular fragmentary vision of reality.
The set is preserved in hardcover folders, which has allowed for the proper preservation of these unique documents. Their handwritten nature gives them an exceptional value, as they are materials of the author's direct work, in which the immediacy of creative thought, corrections and the process of literary construction can be appreciated.
From a bibliographical and philological point of view, these manuscripts are highly relevant pieces for the study of Ramón Gómez de la Serna's work, since they allow access to his writing in its original state, without editorial mediation. Their interest lies not only in their literary content, but also in their documentary value as a testimony of the creative process of one of the great renovators of contemporary Spanish prose.
Because of their rarity, their autograph nature and their importance within the author's oeuvre as a whole, these manuscripts are of extraordinary interest to collectors, researchers and specialists in avant-garde literature and Spanish exile.
