Published in 1960 by the University Press of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Obras en un acto I is a representative sample of the dramatic production of Max Aub, one of the most outstanding figures of the Spanish literature of the Republican exile. A writer, playwright, narrator and essayist, Aub developed much of his work in Mexico after being forced to leave Spain as a result of the Civil War, becoming a fundamental voice of Hispanic culture in the 20th century.
This volume brings together a selection of short plays in which the author displays some of the most outstanding characteristics of his dramaturgy: precision in dialogue, psychological depth of the characters, critical sense and a constant reflection on the human condition. Through apparently everyday situations, Aub explores moral, social and existential conflicts, constructing scenes of great dramatic intensity that reveal the contradictions and tensions of his time.
Max Aub's theater is characterized by his ability to combine realism, formal experimentation and intellectual commitment. His one-act plays condense with extraordinary effectiveness the concerns that ran through his entire literary production: memory, exile, identity, injustice and the fragility of human relationships. In these short plays, the author demonstrates a remarkable ability to create complex atmospheres and raise universal questions through scenic resources of apparent simplicity.
The 1960 edition, published by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, is also of special historical and cultural interest as it is part of the effort to disseminate the work of the exiled intellectuals who enriched Mexican academic and artistic life during the 20th century. It constitutes a valuable testimony of Aub's close relationship with Mexico, the country where he developed an essential part of his intellectual career and from which he projected a work of international scope.
Because of its relevance within Max Aub's theatrical bibliography and because it represents a mature stage of his literary production, Obras en un acto I is a piece of great interest for collectors, researchers of contemporary theater and scholars of Spanish exile literature. Its university publication and its link to one of the most important cultural institutions in Latin America reinforce its bibliographic and historical value.
