Crepusculario is one of the fundamental works to understand the literary beginnings of Pablo Neruda. Originally published in 1923 and republished by Editorial Nascimento in 1926, this book reveals a young poet in the process of discovering his artistic identity, exploring the expressive possibilities of language and building his own voice that would later achieve universal recognition.
The poetry of Crepusculario is marked by a deep subjectivity, a melancholic sensibility and a contemplative tone that reflect the concerns of youth. His verses are dominated by images of twilight, landscapes, women and elements of nature, treated from a romantic and idealistic perspective. However, social and existential concerns also begin to appear, anticipating the thematic evolution of Neruda's later work.
The renowned scholar Hernán Loyola has pointed out that this book portrays the vesperal and nostalgic character of the young poet, becoming a testimony of a decisive stage of his literary formation. The work was originally organized in five sections: Helios y las canciones, Los crepúsculos de Maruri, Ventana al camino, Pelleas y Melisanda and Final, and included engravings made by Juan Gandulfo, Neruda's close friend and recipient of the book's dedication.
The author himself recalled in his memoirs, Confieso que he vivido, that he sold the rights to Crepusculario in 1924, using the money obtained for a celebration with his friends Alberto Rojas Jiménez, Álvaro Hinojosa and Homero Arce, an anecdote that illustrates the economic precariousness and youthful enthusiasm that accompanied his first years of creation.
The reviewed copy corresponds to the rare second edition published by Nascimento in Santiago de Chile in 1926. Bound in paperback with flaps and later protected with plastic lining, it also presents an interesting documentary addition: a complete four-page clipping of the Primera Plana newspaper of February 16, 1965 dedicated to Neruda. This complementary material provides historical and testimonial value, linking the public reception of the poet with an early edition of one of his most significant works.
Due to its antiquity, scarce availability in the market and relevance within the Nerudian bibliography, this edition of Crepusculario constitutes a piece of notable interest for collectors, researchers and admirers of Spanish-American literature.
