Recuerdos de 1949 is a commemorative edition published in Buenos Aires in 1949, with a limited edition of only 99 numbered copies, of which this volume corresponds to copy number 71. The work gathers texts by three of the most representative voices of contemporary Spanish poetry: Antonio Machado, Federico García Lorca and Miguel Hernández.
Published a decade after the end of the Spanish Civil War, this edition must be understood in the context of the Spanish intellectual and cultural exile in Latin America. During those years, Buenos Aires became one of the main centers for the preservation and dissemination of Spanish Republican literature, hosting numerous publishing initiatives aimed at keeping alive the memory of authors whose work had been silenced or restricted in post-war Spain.
The gathering of Machado, Lorca and Hernández in the same volume has a profound symbolic meaning. The three poets represent different generations and literary sensibilities, but they share an extraordinary capacity to express, from different perspectives, the human, social and spiritual concerns of the Spain of their time. Likewise, their careers were marked by the historical events of the first half of the 20th century: Machado died in exile in France, Lorca was assassinated at the beginning of the Civil War, and Hernández died in prison a few years after the conflict.
More than a simple literary compilation, Recuerdos de 1949 is a tribute to three fundamental figures of modern Spanish poetry and a testimony to the will to preserve their legacy in particularly difficult historical circumstances. Its limited and numbered edition nature also increases its bibliographic and collector's interest, making it a representative piece of the publishing activity of the Spanish exile in America.
