BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
French mirror of the late 19th century.
Wooden structure, beveled moon, brass, champlevé enamel and gilded moldings.
It has small losses of ebonized in the pediment area.
Measurements: 136 × 98 × 3 cm.
Sumptuous French mirror of the late nineteenth century, with beveled glass moon mounted on a rectangular frame of wood soul, richly decorated with champlevé enamel applications in mauve and purple tones. The enameled compositions, floral and ornamental in character, are housed in metal cavities probably created by casting or engraving, following the traditional champlevé technique. This technique, whose use dates back to Antiquity and flourished in Romanesque goldsmithing, found a certain decorative continuity in the eclecticism of the 19th century and occasionally in the modernist repertoire, as an evocation of historical styles and applied arts. The frame is flanked by moldings carved in wood and gilded, forming grooved fretwork, acanthus leaves and palmettes. The piece is topped by a truncated pediment-shaped crest, centered by a golden cup and a mask of Greco-Roman inspiration, elements that reinforce the classicist theatricality of the whole.
