BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Follows models of WILLIAM KENT (1685-1748)
Wall console, ca. 1920-1930.
In marble.
Measurements: 97 x 212.5 x 44 cm.
This wall console is a refined evocation of the style of William Kent, the distinguished architect, designer and landscape designer of early British Georgianism, whose creations marked a milestone in the transition from Palladian classicism to the ornamental splendor of the mid-18th century. The piece, although executed in the first third of the 20th century, breathes the breath of a scholarly aesthetic that refers to the grandeur of the classical world reinterpreted by Kent.
The rectangular tabletop is supported by four front legs carved with foliate motifs, palmettes and scallops, topped with claw feet. The waist is ornamented with a bas-relief fretwork of geometric design and Hellenic inspiration. This molding, sober but refined, acts as a transition frieze between the legs and the top, in a play of planes and proportions that responds faithfully to the compositional canons of the Kentian style.
The beveled profile of the top is incised with a vegetal fretwork, carved with technical skill and decorative sense. This subtle but precise ornamentation not only crowns the piece, but also accentuates its belonging to the aesthetic universe of William Kent, where idealized nature and classical order dialogue in perfect harmony.
In short, this console reflects the spirit of the historicist revival that honors the legacy of Kent, who shaped Georgian furniture and architecture.
