BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Majorcan bed, ca. 1730.
Walnut wood.
Measurements: 228 x 157 x 195 cm.
This walnut bed presents a robust and symmetrical architectural structure, in which several distinctive elements of the insular baroque are integrated. The uprights or salomonic columns that articulate its vertical silhouette are one of its most outstanding features: these twisted columns, associated with the baroque tradition, evoke movement, theatricality and ornamental richness. They are topped with pinnacles, adding a sense of solemn verticality and a clearly ornamental intent.
The headboard incorporates a delicate gallery or balustrade composed of balusters also of Solomonic form, turned with remarkable precision. The turned feet add to the decorative richness of the bed.
The piece, of imposing proportions, is a splendid example of Baroque island woodwork, in which Italian and Hispanic influences, present in the Balearic archipelago at the time, converge.
