BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Grenadian inlaid game table from the mid-19th century.
Walnut wood and mother of pearl.
Needs restoration.
Measurements: 83 × 84 × 44 cm (closed); 78 × 84 × 85 cm (open).
Exquisite mid-19th century Grenadian game table, made of walnut wood with a profuse mother-of-pearl inlay. The piece of furniture is articulated by means of a folding system: when closed it forms an elegant side table, and when opened it transforms into a double board for playing cards and backgammon, with a green mat on one side and the backgammon board finely inlaid on the reverse.
The entire surface of the table (top, sides, waist and legs) is carefully decorated with inlay, forming stylized rosettes, fillets, geometric fretwork and synthesized floral compositions, following the Granadian artisan tradition inherited from the Mudejar and Nasrid tastes. Even the backgammon board itself is decorated with meticulous inlay work.
The sinuous legs combine stability and visual lightness, while the whole reflects the refinement of nineteenth-century Granadian furniture, where the inlaid ornamentation transforms a functional object into a true objet d'art.
