BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
MARIUS ERNEST SABINO (Italy, 1878-1961)
"Pair of sconces".
Nickel-plated bronze and glass.
Measurements: 37,5 x 21 x 13 cm (x2).
Pair of art deco style wall sconces with a rectangular design. The sconces have a bronze frame with a design of geometric lines in relief and a frosted glass panel that diffuses the light.
Of Sicilian origin, Marius Ernest Sabino trained at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris, where he was particularly interested in new applications of glass. After the First World War, returning from the front, he founded his own manufacture. Interested in both the artistic and technical aspect of glass production, he developed innovative techniques both constructive and decorative, making mainly molded pieces, with relief decorations. From the twenties onwards he made both official commissions as well as vases and other ornamental pieces, where his quality as a sculptor is evident. Sabino also showed his work in the Paris Salons, and exhibited a large illuminated column at the Universal Exposition of 1937. After World War II, Marius Sabino continued to run the factory, although he stopped making new designs.
