Pair of Charles IV style chests of drawers, with a probable provenance from Catalonia or Mallorca, and dated 19th century. These pieces are a refined example of Spanish furniture of transition between Rococo and Neoclassicism, clearly adopting the formal and decorative languages of the classicist taste prevailing during the reign of Charles IV (1788-1808), although its manufacture responds to a later time in the nineteenth century.
Made of walnut, boxwood and lemongrass, these chests of drawers stand out for their delicate woodwork and inlays, which combine a sober geometric layout with meticulously executed ornamentation. The structure is based on a prismatic body of straight lines, seated on truncated pyramidal legs, a direct reflection of the neoclassical aesthetic, which favors symmetry, balance and clean forms.
Each chest of drawers has a virtually identical design, with three drawer bodies arranged hierarchically: a narrower upper drawer and two wider lower ones. The drawer fronts are framed with light wood fillets, creating a contrasting effect with the darker grain of the walnut, especially in the center panel.
On the upper part of the body, the smaller drawer is decorated with a border of interlacing wavy lines, executed in lemongrass and boxwood, which provide a continuous and elegant ornamental rhythm. This decorative motif is repeated on the lower skirt and legs, generating a stylistic unity that speaks of the overall careful design of the pieces.
