Louis XVI style chest of drawers from France, late XIX century. Made of finely worked wood, with gilded bronze applications and topped with a marble top, this chest of drawers shows a synthesis between the restrained elegance of neoclassicism and the material opulence characteristic of high-end French furniture.
The Louis XVI style is defined by its return to sobriety and straight lines, in reaction to the undulating forms of the earlier rococo. In this piece, geometry is evident in the front organization of the drawers and in the symmetrical decoration, with an emphasis on verticality, accentuated by fluted pilasters and gilt details framing each section. The handles and keyholes, made of gilded bronze, feature circular forms ornamented with enamel or decorated porcelain, adding a touch of refinement without being overly exuberant.
The curved sides and the fluted baluster-shaped legs, topped with bronze sabots, complete the aesthetics of the ensemble. The marble top, slightly protruding and framed by an openwork bronze gallery, not only fulfills a practical function, but also underlines the decorative and sumptuous character of the piece.
