Measurements: 88 x 76 x 47 cm (x2).
Pair of Carlos IV style corner cabinets, possibly from Mallorca or Catalonia and dated 19th century.
Built in fine wood, these corner cabinets are conceived to be placed in corners, as indicated by their triangular plan. This functional arrangement is harmonized with an extremely careful aesthetic that denotes the influence of French and Italian models of Neoclassicism, sensitively adapted to the local traditions of peninsular furniture. The design is articulated in a compact structure, with a molded plinth and low cut legs, where the interplay of straight lines and geometric shapes marks a clear distinction from the curvilinear dynamism of the preceding rococo furniture.
The decoration of this furniture is done by means of marquetry of contrasting woods, a technique that consists of inlaying different types of wood to create ornamental motifs. In this case, the surface of the doors and side panels is richly decorated with symmetrical compositions: garlands, floral bouquets, medallions, urns and classical trophies, all inscribed in geometric frames and interlaced borders. Particularly noteworthy is the central motif of the oval medallion.
