DESCRIPTION
Wing table, England, c. 1800.
Mahogany wood.
Measurements: 73 x 51 x 55 cm.
George III "Pembroke" table, with side drawer. One of the most useful and versatile of Georgian furniture, the Pembroke table is named after its probable inventor, Henry Herbert, 9th Earl of Pembroke (1693-1751). As a general rule, the classic Pembroke table should have three distinguishing features. The first is a set of hinged wings on both sides, mounted on hinged supports, which allow the size of the table to be expanded according to its intended use. Ideal as a nightstand, tea-serving surface, small dining table, side table or game table, the Pembroke table's extraordinary versatility explains its important role in Georgian homes and its enduring popularity today.
