DESCRIPTION
Pair of candlesticks on pedestals. Italy, XIX century.
Measurements: 133 cm (candelabra height) + 90 cm (base height); 223 cm (total height with bases).
Silver plated metal, gilded carving and mirrors.
Pair of Louis XVI style silvered metal candlesticks. They rest on two bases decorated with carved and gilded wood motifs covered with Venetian Murano mirrors. The Venetian mirrors were handmade on the island of Murano in Venice. Murano blown glass and detailed engravings make these pieces authentic works of art. There were not few centers of glassmaking in the Christian West during the late Middle Ages, but all eclipsed Venice from the early thirteenth century to the seventeenth century. Venice had for teachers to the Byzantines from whom he learned the enameling and gilding of the pieces and in the city and its neighboring island of Murano distinguished by the finesse, elegance, lightness, variety and fantasy of their products that today are admired in many museums and collections.
