DESCRIPTION
Biedermeier showcase; Germany, first third of the nineteenth century.
Walnut veneer and pine wood structure.
Presents inscription on the back "Wiesbaden".
Measurements: 157 x 77 x 42 cm.
Biedermeier showcase, made in walnut wood in the Netherlands towards the end of the 19th century. It is a design that exemplifies the survival and late adaptation of this Central European bourgeois style, characterized by elegant sobriety and the exaltation of the material quality against excessive ornamentation.
The piece presents a vertical and balanced structure, with a glazed door that reveals an interior conceived for exhibition. The turned columns of Solomonic inspiration, the stepped finial and the lockable lower drawers add visual rhythm without breaking the general harmony, faithful to the Biedermeier ideology of order, proportion and comfort.
The Biedermeier style emerged as a refined and functional version of Napoleon I's French Empire style, inspired by the aesthetics of ancient Rome but adapted to the modern homes of the early 19th century.
