DESCRIPTION
Bed with canopy. France, XVII century.
Walnut wood.
Measurements: 265 x 160 x 208 cm.
Important French bed structure with canopy or canopy typical of the French bed during the seventeenth century. The structure, completely made of walnut wood, follows a majestic disposition, raised on legs of turned profile, on which supports a galloned waist, the latter flanked by smooth moldings ornamented with vegetal bas-reliefs. The canopy is supported by a total of four columns with fluted shafts and simplified Corinthian capitals, crowned by turned and, once again, galloned bodies that add height to the piece. Crowning the piece, a canopy that continues the architectural design of the waist of the bed harmonizes the whole, emphasizing the architectural character by presenting the appearance of a stepped cornice. The headboard of the bed stands out, divided into three clearly compartmentalized bodies. The lower one, free of decoration, holds a bas-relief soffit of marked Renaissance inspiration. In this way, we observe a group of putti that cross the seas mounted on carriages pulled by trotting horses. The headboard is topped by a carved ornamental coping, decorated in bas-relief representing the head of a cherub surrounded by plant and fruit elements, finished at the top in curved and counter-curved forms.
