Side table made at the end of the 19th century in ebonized wood, partially gilded, with marquetry applications in stained fruitwood and rosewood, and enriched with a central patinated bronze medallion. The piece responds to the historicist tastes characteristic of European production in the second half of the 19th century, a period in which cabinetmakers reinterpreted models and ornamental languages from previous styles, combining traditional techniques with a marked decorative intent. The table has a sinuous, slightly molded top, under which there is a band decorated with marquetry panels of geometric and stylized vegetal motifs. In the center of this band is a circular medallion in patinated bronze with relief, conceived as the visual focus of the whole and framed by the rich polychrome of the wood veneers. The alternation between the dark surface of the ebonized wood and the light inlaid marquetry creates an elegant chromatic contrast that underlines the refinement of the cabinetwork.
Due to its formal conception and the use of noble materials and complex decorative techniques, such as marquetry and the application of metal elements, this side table is part of the decorative cabinetmaking tradition of the late 19th century, intended for bourgeois interiors where this furniture fulfilled a practical as well as an ornamental function.
