DESCRIPTION
Dressing table with mirror; GUÉRET FRÈRES, France, nineteenth century.
Stamped mahogany wood and gilded bronze mounts.
Presents stamp of manufacture.
Measurements: 95 x 140 x 55 cm (dresser); 127 x 130 x 17 cm.
Dressing table with mirror topped by a top and two gilded bronze pineapples, flanked by two shelves on each side with railings. It features a veined marble top, a material also used for the shelves, and an organized front with three drawers in the upper band, two central doors (with interior shelves in the form of wooden pull-out trays) and four small drawers flanking them, all lockable. On the sides of this lower zone there are two columns of marked classicist influence, enhanced with gilded bronze applications. The cabinet is raised on four legs and, on the back, has stamps linked to the company that created it.
The Louis XVI style is considered in France a current integrated in neoclassicism, developed approximately between 1760 and 1789, although during the nineteenth century works inspired by it continued to be produced, and succeeded by the Directory style. It is characterized by its inspiration in classical antiquity, especially in Rome, as well as its link with enlightened thought.
The firm Guéret Frères (Denis-Désiré and Onésime) was established in Paris around 1853 and, from 1867, became known as Guéret Jeune et Cie. and remained active until the 1880s. They participated in the International Exhibitions of 1855, where they won the First Class Medal, 1867 and 1878, specializing in Louis XV and Louis XVI style furniture, although they also stood out for their reinterpretations of other historical styles. Their works are currently preserved in institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco.
