An elegant two-tier side table designed in the style of the École de Nancy, where the structure of the piece is transformed by fluid lines and forms directly inspired by nature. The sinuous silhouette of the legs and supports, together with the delicate interplay between the two levels, gives the piece a remarkable sense of lightness and movement.
A French cabinetmaker and designer, Camille Gauthier was one of the leading figures associated with the École de Nancy and the development of Art Nouveau in the decorative arts. Trained in Nancy and later in Paris, between 1894 and 1900 he worked alongside Louis Majorelle, participating in the design of furniture and decorations that helped cement the firm’s prestige.In 1901, he launched his own business and shortly thereafter founded, together with Paul Poinsignon, the firm Gauthier-Poinsignon. His work is characterized by inspiration drawn from nature, sinuous lines, and a refined use of marquetry, combining remarkable craftsmanship with a desire to bring the new language of Art Nouveau to a wider audience.A member of the École de Nancy since 1901, Gauthier represents a particularly interesting strand of the movement: one that sought to integrate art into everyday life, transforming furniture into a space for artistic experimentation without sacrificing its function.
