A piece of special interest within Gaspar Homar’s early work, in which the piece of furniture ceases to be a mere functional element and becomes a true exercise in the decorative arts. Its vertical, architectural structure is brought to life through a refined combination of marquetry, carving, gilding, and brass accents, creating a play of textures and sheens characteristic of Barcelona Modernism.
The floral decoration, present both in the marquetry on the upper section and in the carving that runs along the fronts and cornices, reveals Homar’s penchant for transforming nature into ornamentation. Particularly striking are the brass fittings, conceived almost as small pieces of jewelry applied to the furniture, which provide a sumptuous counterpoint to the warmth of the wood.
The collection is particularly interesting because it dates from the period when Homar was consolidating his personal style. Trained at the La Llotja School and a disciple of Francesc Vidal—one of the great innovators of Catalan decorative arts—Homar would go on to create works in which marquetry would take on exceptional importance. His furniture, often conceived in collaboration with architects and interior designers, shared the same aspiration toward the integration of the arts that characterizes Barcelona’s great Modernist interiors.The piece also draws interesting parallels with the furniture Homar created for some of the most notable interiors of Modernist Barcelona, particularly the Casa Lleó Morera, where his designs reached an extraordinary level of sophistication. In contrast to the monumental nature of those comprehensive interior designs, this display cabinet concentrates within a single piece much of what made his work famous: carefully selected woods, naturalistic-inspired marquetry, ornamental carving, and metalwork treated as decorative elements.
Gaspar Homar ranks among the leading figures in the decorative arts of Catalan Modernism, and his furniture is now part of major museum collections.
