This monumental cabinet is an elaborate example of Damascene cabinetmaking, characterized by the combination of a complex architectural structure with profuse carving and marquetry decoration. The façade is organized into two superimposed sections, articulated by niches, turned columns, cut-out arches, and architectural friezes, culminating in a perforated cornice of striking verticality. These elements reproduce, on a small scale, features typical of Damascene interiors.

The ornamentation covers virtually the entire surface. Plant scrolls and geometric bands are combined with small mother-of-pearl inlays, while the central panels feature star-shaped compositions in the Islamic tradition. The lower section is particularly richly decorated, where the central door features a complex geometric pattern constructed from interlaced polygons and mother-of-pearl inlays. In the upper section, a calligraphic cartouche in Arabic completes the decorative scheme.

Historical sources on Damascus artisans indicate that manufacturers of luxury furniture preferred to work with walnut and routinely used mother-of-pearl and woods with hallmarks to decorate their pieces. Their production catered both to the local market and to a growing demand from abroad.

During the 19th century, this furniture gained significant international popularity, fueled by the European taste for Orientalism. The Mucem in Marseille houses a Syrian chest of drawers from this period that similarly combines the local tradition of carving and inlay with a European-inspired design, and notes that numerous pieces of furniture produced in the Ottoman Empire were specifically intended for the Western market. In this display case, the monumental scale of the structure and the extraordinary density of ornamentation place the piece within that tradition of ceremonial furniture, conceived both as functional furnishings and as a demonstration of the virtuosity of the Damascene workshops.
