BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of candlesticks. Italy, probably Naples, early 19th century.
Mahogany and marble. Gilded and patinated wood.
Measurements: 128 x 46.5 x 46.5 cm.

A pair of early 19th-century Italian candlesticks, likely made in Naples, notable for the uniqueness of their design and the refined combination of materials and references to the classical world. Each piece rests on an elegant tripod base, from which three stylized, slightly curved mahogany legs extend, finished with gilded hooves and visually linked to magnificent carved and gilded goat heads located beneath the tabletop. Between them sits a semi-globular body with fluting and a green patina, designed to resemble an ancient vase and topped at the bottom by a rosette, while the upper part features a circular marble tabletop. The repertoire of animal heads, hooves, tripod shapes, and elements inspired by archaeological vessels fully reflects the neoclassical and archaeologizing taste that flourished particularly in the Neapolitan decorative arts between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, spurred by the impact of the discoveries at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Its significance also lies in the fact that it is part of a pair, its monumental height of 128 cm, and the unusual sculptural richness of its design, which transcends the function of a candelabrum to transform each piece into one with a striking architectural presence.
