The trient was a gold coin characteristic of the Visigothic kingdom, equivalent to a solid third, and was the main monetary unit in Visigothic Hispania between the 6th and 7th centuries. These coins reflect the continuity of the late Roman tradition, adapted to the political structures of the Visigothic kingdom.
During the reign of Suintila (621-631), one of the most outstanding monarchs for achieving the territorial unification of the Iberian Peninsula under Visigothic rule, coinage had an important propagandistic value. The coins not only served to facilitate exchanges, but also to affirm the authority of the king in a large and diverse territory.
As for their design, the Visigothic trients have a very characteristic iconography: on the obverse there is usually a schematic bust of the monarch, in a very stylized and not very naturalistic style, accompanied by Latin legends with his name. On the reverse, it is common to find a cross on steps, a Christian symbol that reflects the close relationship between monarchy and Church, together with the name of the mint.
