The so called "reales de molinillo" receive their name from the peculiar aspect of their design, especially on the reverse, where the arrangement of the cross and the heraldic elements visually reminds of the blades of a mill. These coins, generally silver, were part of the Hapsburg monetary system and circulated widely both in the peninsula and in the territories of the empire.
The reign of Charles II (1665-1700) was marked by a deep economic and monetary crisis, characterized by devaluation, scarcity of precious metals and irregular minting. This context influenced the quality and finish of many coins of the period, which often have irregular shapes and poorly defined mintages, typical of traditional techniques such as hammering.
