The ducat was a gold coin of great prestige in Europe, adopted by the Hispanic monarchy as part of the economic reorganization promoted by Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. These coins stood out for their high purity and their key role in international trade, especially in a period of political and economic expansion following events such as the Taking of Granada and the beginning of the Spanish presence in America.
As for their design, the ducats of the Catholic Monarchs usually showed the busts of the monarchs facing each other or together, as well as the coat of arms with the unified arms of Castile, Leon, Aragon and Granada. The legends, usually in Latin, reinforced the royal authority and the idea of dynastic unity.
