BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Terrestrial globe. England, c. 1880.
Mahogany wood; brass; intaglio stamp.
Has flaws and losses.
Globe mounted on a brass meridian with engraved quadrant scales, raised on three legs terminating in brass sheaves with crossbar centered by a magnetic compass.
The globe is the only geographical representation that does not suffer distortion. They are usually mounted, as shown here, on an angled support, which facilitates their use by representing at the same time the angle of the planet with respect to the sun and its own rotation. This makes it easy to visualize how the days and seasons change.
