BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Box of compasses and measuring instruments. W. H. HARLING. England, ca.1860.
Steel, bone and bakelite instruments.
Mahogany wood case, brass keyhole and cartouche.
Exhibits wear consistent with age and use. Slight interior crack in the wood.
Measurements: 5,5 x 36 x 13 cm.

Founded in 1851, William Henry Harling specialized in the manufacture of drawing instruments, with a factory at the Grosvenor Works, Hackney, London EC.

The case features a solid wood core in mahogany. It houses a panoply of compasses, with interchangeable fittings and finely crafted steel lines, with bakelite and bone details, as well as a variety of rulers and scales of different lengths and purposes, crafted in wood (probably boxwood or a fine-grained wood) with precise engravings.
