BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Tobacco pipe; Central Europe, first quarter of the 19th century.
Meerschaum and silver.
Measurements: 11 x 14 x 6 cm.
Pipe bowl carved in seafoam that stands out for its elaborate sculptural work of high quality, which reveals a complex iconographic program with a clear commemorative charge, possibly related to the context after the Coalition Wars (1792-1815).
In the body of the cup, a profusely detailed central shield is observed, displaying a crowned double-headed eagle, with spread wings, carrying a scepter in one claw and a sword in the other. This heraldic representation is characteristic of the emblems of the Habsburg or Holy Roman Empire.
Flanking the shield and distributed in the composition in relief, equestrian figures corresponding to cavalry soldiers are represented, recognizable by their distinctive uniforms and morphologies. On the left a horseman of the French Napoleonic cavalry seems to be identified, while on the right a horseman of the Prussian cavalry is hinted at, suggesting a direct allusion to the clashes and shifting alliances that marked the period of the Coalition Wars.
Pipes, in particular, have been considered true pieces of art and material testimony to eras and styles. Made from a variety of materials, many of them reflect the aesthetics, technology and values of the societies that produced them. Their careful manufacture and ornamental design turned some of them into luxury objects.
Today, beyond the debate surrounding tobacco consumption and its effects, pipes represent a field of interest for collectors, anthropologists and museologists. Their value lies not only in their rarity or antiquity, but also in what they reveal about everyday practices, the evolution of industrial design and the history of consumption. Thus, these objects transcend their original function to become bearers of cultural memory.
