BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of Louis XV style candlesticks; Maison Millet, Paris, mid-nineteenth century.
Gilded brooch.
Signed.
Measurements: 48 cm (height, x2).
Pair of Louis XV style gilt bronze candelabra reinterpreted by the prestigious Maison Millet of Paris. Each piece presents a balanced and exuberant composition, with sinuous and asymmetrical arms that unfold in scrolls and acanthus leaves, culminating in five lights crowned by cups decorated with vegetal motifs.
At the bottom, child figures in high relief embrace the central shaft, evoking the grace and dynamism characteristic of 18th century French rococo. The base, profusely ornamented with rockeries and vegetal elements, supports the whole with a sense of fluid and decorative movement. The mercury gilt bronze finish enhances the richness of the details and gives the surfaces a warmth and brilliance typical of Parisian luxury of the Belle Époque.
Founded in Paris by Blaise Millet in 1853, Maison Millet was one of the most renowned furniture and objets d'art manufacturers of the 19th century. The firm stood out for the reproduction and reinterpretation of historical French styles, particularly those of the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, reaching a very high level of technical execution.
Under the direction of his son Oscar Millet, the maison won the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889 and the Grand Prix in 1900, consolidating its international prestige. His works were appreciated for their meticulous craftsmanship, the use of precious materials and the collaboration with leading sculptors and bronzesmiths.
