BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Mirror ZADOUNANAISKY (France, 1903-1983), ca. 1930
Unique piece.
Wrought iron.
Measurements: 105 x 110 cm.

Art Deco mirror by Zadounaïsky, made around 1930. It is a work of unique and exceptional character, where the functionality of the object is elevated to the category of decorative sculpture. The piece presents a circular format of great visual strength, framed by a finely worked wrought iron structure.

The frame is distinguished by a delicate geometric work in relief, with a rhythmic succession of linear motifs that run along the contour of the mirror, providing depth and dynamism. At the bottom, two curved lateral appendages and a central vertical element reinforce the symmetrical composition, evoking a language halfway between modern abstraction and an almost zoomorphic stylization, very characteristic of late Art Deco.

The dark patina of the iron contrasts elegantly with the reflective surface, underlining the craftsmanship of the wrought iron and giving the piece a monumental presence, despite the purity of its lines. The result is an object of great sculptural power, conceived both for a refined interior and to be appreciated as a stand-alone work.

Active mainly in the 1920s and 1930s, Zadounaïsky stood out for his ability to transform a traditionally utilitarian material into a modern decorative language, fully aligned with the avant-garde of his time. At the 13th Salon des Tuileries in 1935, his works attracted the attention of Ferdinand-Antoine, Viscount de Lacroix-Laval. The nobleman's enthusiasm for the artist's work led him to commission Zadounaïsky to create several lighting pieces for his chateau at Noailles, in south-central France.

Zadounaïsky's mirrors are today extremely rare on the market and highly sought after by collectors and interior architects, representing the perfect synthesis of craftsmanship, modernity and Art Deco spirit.
