BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Sewing box. Spain, XVIII century.
With oak wood and mahogany marquetry.
In good state of preservation. It lacks a handle.
Measurements: 60 x 69 x 37 cm.

This is a tabletop sewing box on a central foot, made in Spain at the end of the 18th century or beginning of the 19th century, within the context of Neoclassicism. This type of furniture was intended for women's housework, especially sewing, a fundamental activity in the daily life of wealthy households of the period.

The sewing box responds to a new conception of the domestic interior, in which private spaces acquire greater relevance and are adapted to personal and daily uses. During the transition from the 18th to the 19th century, there was a proliferation of small pieces of furniture designed to accompany specific activities, combining functionality and decorative care.

The presence of integrated drawers made it possible to store threads, fabrics and small utensils, while the geometric marquetry decoration reflects the neoclassical taste for order, symmetry and the repetition of motifs. This type of ornamentation was common in Spanish furniture of the period, where French influence merged with a strong local craftsmanship tradition.

The sewing box rests on a central foot, a practical solution that facilitated its placement in small rooms and its comfortable use next to a chair or armchair. These pieces were usually found in bedrooms, cabinets or private rooms, forming part of the intimate furnishings of the home.

As a whole, the furniture is a representative example of Spanish neoclassical sewing furniture, testimony to an era in which furniture specialized to meet the needs of daily life, while maintaining a high level of quality craftsmanship and aesthetic sense.
