DESCRIPTION
Bidet in the shape of an elephant. India, ca. 1930
Embossed pewter.
Articulated head.
Measurements: 50 x 75 x 40 cm.
Singular piece in the shape of an elephant made of embossed pewter, which combines functionality and exoticism within the orientalist taste of the early twentieth century. The body of the animal, of volumetric forms, presents a surface worked with soft undulations and borders, while the articulated head allows the access to the interior, showing its original use as a container or portable bidet, linked to palace contexts or of high status.
The elephant, a symbol of wisdom and royalty in Indian culture, reinforces the prestigious character of the object, associated with the imaginary of the maharajas. These types of pieces, intended for both private use and ostentation, reflect the fusion between traditional craftsmanship and domestic functionality.
Today it is presented as an object of great visual impact and decorative value, ideal as a singular piece within an eclectic interior or a collection of oriental arts.
