Made in England around 1690 in rosewood and enriched with applications of gilded bronze and Chinese-inspired lacquer, the chest not only fulfills a utilitarian function, but also presents itself as an aesthetic object. Formally, it stands out for its solid and compact structure, reinforced at the edges with hardware that combines function and ornamentation. The bronze plates, with their openwork and sinuous design, run along the surface with symmetrical motifs that evoke a restrained baroque aesthetic, characteristic of the late 17th century English. The large, decorative central lock emphasizes the importance of the contents, while the side handles suggest portability in a domestic or travel context.
One of the most interesting aspects is the lacquered decoration, clearly influenced by the European taste for the oriental, a phenomenon known as "chinoiserie". On the reddish background, scenes and gilded motifs of a narrative and ornamental nature are displayed, imitating the Asian lacquers that were so popular at the time. This fusion of techniques and references is evidence of the rise of international trade and the interest in the exotic in England at the end of the 17th century.
The William and Mary style, associated with the reign of William III of England and Mary II, is characterized by a transition between the heaviness of earlier furniture and a greater structural lightness, as well as by the introduction of new forms, materials and decorative techniques. This chest shows this evolution: although it maintains a robust presence, its refined decoration and the incorporation of international elements place it in a moment of stylistic openness.
