BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Andalusian School; XVIII century.
"Saint Joseph with Child".
Carved and gilded wood.
Preserves period niche.
Measurements: 27 x 10 x 8 cm; 41,5 x 30 x 22 cm (niche).
The scene presents Saint Joseph next to the Child Jesus, establishing an affective and close relationship that reinforces the human dimension of the Holy Family. The composition stands out for its balanced and serene character, typical of the Andalusian production of the 18th century, where the dramatic intensity of the initial Baroque evolves towards softer and more sentimental forms. Saint Joseph is represented as a protective and affectionate figure, in a caring attitude towards the Child, underlining his role as guide and custodian. This interpretation responds to the growing importance of the Josephine cult in the Spanish spirituality of the time.
From the stylistic point of view, the work is characterized by a restrained naturalism, in which the forms are slightly idealized to enhance its devotional function. The treatment of the folds, the softness of the faces and the proximity between the figures generate a scene of great emotional warmth. The Andalusian sculpture of the 18th century tended to seek precisely this balance between realism and expressive tenderness, moving away from the dramatic excesses of the full Baroque.
The whole is conceived as a devotional image probably destined for a religious or private environment. The inclusion of the original niche is especially significant, as it turns the sculpture into a small portable or domestic altarpiece, intended for private prayer. This type of work favored intimate devotion, one of the central aspects of Spanish Baroque spirituality.
