DESCRIPTION
Processional cross; Possibly Aragon, first third of the seventeenth century.
Copper and metal base.
Provenance: Private chapel of Cogolludos.
Measurements: 85 x 34 x 13 cm; 94 cm (height with base).
Processional cross possibly made in Aragon during the first third of the XVII century, executed in copper with later metal base. The piece responds to the models of early Baroque religious goldsmithery, characterized by a rich applied decoration and a marked symbolic sense. It has arms topped with ornamental profiles and a Crucified Christ of remarkable expressiveness, arranged on a circular medallion that reinforces the centrality of the image of Christ.
The shaft incorporates volumetric and decorative elements of architectural and vegetal inspiration, typical of the crosses destined for liturgical ceremonies and solemn processions. These pieces played an essential role in public worship, leading religious processions and patron saint festivities, especially in rural and parish settings.
The provenance of the private chapel of Cogolludos provides a special historical and devotional interest, linking the work with the context of private religiosity and the manifestations of spiritual prestige of the nobility or wealthy families of the time.
